A free Single 60s account lets you build a profile, browse members, receive daily suggestions and send a few messages a day. VIP lifts the message limit and adds advanced search, chat rooms and a list of who likes you. VIP Plus adds exclusive matches and puts you first in other people's suggestions.

None of it needs an app or any technical know-how. If you can send an email, you can use the site, and you share only what you choose to.

A profile that shows the real you

Your profile is the page other members see. It carries a username rather than your real name, the photos you choose, a few lines about yourself and what you are hoping to find: friendship, something casual, or a long-term partner. You can add interests from a list that includes cruises, DIY, documentaries, handicrafts, volunteering, family life and long conversations, so the people who share them can find you. You can also post short status updates, which give people something to reply to.

How are daily suggestions chosen?

Each day the site puts forward a set of people it thinks may suit you. It looks at the age range and distance you prefer, who you would like to meet, how recently people have been active and what kind of relationship each of you wants. Lifestyle points such as smoking and drinking, interests, and religious beliefs all count too. The suggestions are a starting point. You can always ignore them and search for yourself.

Search, say hello and get to know people

Every member can browse and search. A free account can send a limited number of messages each day, and can always read and reply to messages from paid members, so a conversation started by someone on VIP never stalls. You can like profiles, comment on posts and take part in polls and quizzes. When someone's messages are not welcome, block them and they can no longer contact you or see your profile.

Show people you are genuine, free

Three checks are open to every member, free of charge. An ID check confirms you are who you say you are and adds a Verified badge to your profile. A video check does the same through a short live call with a moderator, with no documents needed. Or you can ask the team to review and validate your profile by hand. Other badges, such as Chatterbox and Most Popular, are earned simply by taking part.

Behind the scenes, photos and text are screened by software and by people when they are uploaded, and unusual behavior is flagged for the moderators. The full list is on the safety page.

Is there a Single 60s app?

You do not need one. The site runs in the web browser on any phone, tablet or computer, and on a phone you can add it to your home screen so it opens with one tap, just like an app. Your messages and matches are the same on every device, so you can start a conversation on the computer and carry it on from your phone.
